Pumpkin Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

By: Fork & Stave

Fall is upon us and what better way to get in the Autumn spirit than with a unique cocktail?  For this play on the Old Fashioned cocktail, I infused some W.L. Weller bourbon with Libby’s pure pumpkin mash.  Pumpkin blends very well with the caramel and vanilla flavors of the Weller.  I wanted to incorporate brown sugar as well, so I made some brown sugar cubes.  I included that recipe below, but you can just use regular sugar cubes, if you like.

What you’ll need:

– 1 can of Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin

– Your favorite bourbon (I used W.L. Weller, but any will do)

– 1 Coffee filter

– 1 Cup of light brown sugar (sugar cubes)

– 1 Cup white sugar (sugar cubes)

– 1 Teaspoon nutmeg (sugar cubes)

– 1 Orange

– Angostura bitters

– Club Soda

Brown Sugar Cubes

Step 1 –  Preheat your oven to 250 degrees fahrenheit.

Step 2 –  Add the cup of light brown sugar and cup of white sugar to a small Pyrex baking dish.  Dust the top lightly and evenly with the teaspoon of nutmeg.  Add in 4 teaspoons of water around the dish.  Use a fork to break up any lumps and to evenly mix the components.  Compress and smooth out the sugar using a spatula.  You want to pack the sugar in as tight as possible.

Step 3 –  Using a sharp knife, cut rows and columns into the compressed sugar.  You want to keep them reasonably sized as this will be the shape of your final sugar cubes.  These cuts will also help you break the sugar apart later.

Step 4 –  Put the Pyrex dish into the preheated oven for 1 hour.

Step 5 – Allow the sugar to cool for 1 hour and then remove with a spatula and break apart on your scoring lines.  Don’t worry if some come out as odd shapes, they will still taste great.

Pumpkin Infused Bourbon

Step 1 –  Add 2 tablespoons of Libby’s pumpkin to a small mason jar or other mixing jar with a tight-fitting lid.  Add 3oz bourbon to the jar and attach the lid.  Shake the jar vigorously and sit it on your counter for 30 minutes to let it steep.

Step 2 –  Using  a coffee filter over another glass or jar, pour in the bourbon/pumpkin mixture and let the filter strain out the pumpkin material.  You might need to compress the pumpkin with a spoon to squeeze out the majority of the liquor.

Pumpkin Old Fashioned Cocktail

Step 1 –  In an old fashioned glass, add two sugar cubes and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters per cube.

Step 2 –  Pour in a spash of club soda, add an orange slice, and muddle the ingredients with the sugar cubes.

Step 3 –  Add 1.5 ounces of your pumpkin infused bourbon

Step 4-  Express the zest of an orange onto the rim of the glass.  Top with ice and an orange twist.

Cheers!
